A Reminder About Transgender Day of Remembrance 2012
Art of Transliness would like to kindly remind its followers that Transgender Day of Remembrance is November 20th, 2012. Although it may feel like this is some far-away date, it’s actually fast approaching. We would like to encourage all of you to either participate in a Transgender Day of Remembrance event or create one for your community. Many larger cities host readings of the names of those who have lost their lives, hold candle-lit vigils or some kind of walk to raise awareness of the violence that is shown against the transgender community, mainly the transwomen in the community. Go to these events. Show your support.
If nothing else, please take this month and the next to become the best ally to transwomen that you can be. Educate yourself on their struggles, make yourself aware of the ones who have lost their lives because they identified as trans* or expressed themselves in a non-binary way. We owe it to the ones who have tragically been taken from us to remember them, commemorate them, and not let their deaths be in vain. Let’s all come together as a community and make our world a safer and kinder space for all types of people.
P.S. Fellow transmen, don’t make this about us. This is largely not about us. But our roles in showing support is huge and it is expected and you should show up.
