Art of Transliness

Answer
What would you say the chances of a trans* man becoming a high school teacher are? I've been thinking about it as a career path but when I looked online about how many trans* people were teachers, I was very discouraged. I live in the south but I'm planning on moving someplace more liberal.

Zak: I asked my friend Gabe (who is trans* and works in the public school system) and he said that it was definitely possible and added that obviously it is important to have the proper qualifications and such but that, “…being trans* shouldn’t be an issue unless (like any other job) the employer is being discriminatory.” You might have trouble getting hired if you run into employers who are against the idea of hiring a trans* person, but there’s nothing specifically excluding a trans* person from being a teacher. I’d say it’s a reasonable goal to have! Don’t be discouraged, there are other people out there in your situation who have successful teaching careers (or who have even transitioned on the job). It will vary from place to place how things work out for you because a lot depends on your specific boss, school board, and fellow teachers, but if it is something you want I think you should still try to work toward it.
