June 2011

Since you're getting a lot of ads and such, you should make a page, like the about this blog page, that has those as links and tell people to submit the link and you'll post it on there or something more discreet so that it doesn't stray from the purpose, yet helps out many transmen.

That’s a good idea, we’ll consider it.

I know that one of the side effect of T is damaging the liver. I've been on T for +6 months and I just got the blood test result back, saying that I have elevated liver enzyme. It's only a little bit, not to the point of cancer or anything, but I am still worried. What would help to decrease the level? Would eating healthier with less meat and more veggies help? This is something that I haven't been doing :( Anything else?

Do you drink? Alcohol damages the liver and cutting down on your drinking could help.

If that isn’t the issue, green leafy vegetables can help, as well as cutting down on fried and fatty foods. Sometimes people do detox programs to improve liver function, but if I would ask my doctor before doing anything like that. Taking milk thistle supplements might also help.

Transfriendly Doctors in Iowa

Hey for those near Des Moines, you can go to Dr. Joseph Freund at the Family Practice Center which is one of the Planned Parenthood of the Heartland’s centers. I worked with Joe for many years, great doctor and very passionate about the trans community. One thing to keep in mind when scheduling an appointment, you’ll be going through a call center so tell them that you want to schedule an appointment at the Family Practice center with Dr. Freund.

Trans Activists From South Africa, Botswana

transguys:

Living openly as trans men, Tebogo and Skipper are two of only a small handful of people willing to do so across the continent of Africa.  Tebogo works for Gender Dynamix as an outreach officer in South Africa. Skipper has founded a trans organization called Rainbow Identity in Botswana. They are strong activists who work especially in rural areas and black townships and strive to maintain the indigenous knowledge of African transgender and intersex identity.

We have an amazing opportunity to create global dialogue and cultural exchange for South African and North American trans communities, but we need your help to make it happen!

This looks really awesome. I (Zak) studied abroad and worked at a school in Cape Town, South Africa and there’s a really excellent social justice atmosphere there.

Are there any trans* friendly doctors in Iowa that you know of?

There’s a Planned Parenthood clinic in Des Moines (unsure of which one, sorry) that my nurse practitioner was going to refer me to. Other than that I don’t personally know of any but here’s a list of GLBT health services in Iowa City.

Hey guys! I need a little help finding a trans friendly doctor in the Indianapolis area. I don't have health insurance and the one go-to doctor most trans folk use here that works on a sliding scale, Dr. Anderson, is no longer able to prescribe hormones. Do you guys know of anyone?

It appears as though Dr. Melissa Cavagham is one of the only other trans* friendly doctors that prescribes hormones in your area. Since she’s affiliated with the university maybe she will work on a sliding scale? Hope that helps.

Seeking a Job

I just got my name legally changed and was wondering how to handle applications and whether or not to list previous jobs I’ve worked or cite myself as having no experience. A friend of mine found this and I thought i would share:

Being a male or transmale feminist is NOT an oxymoron

bittergrapes:

I’ve heard people tell me before that I can’t be a feminist since I’m transmale. Their reason for saying so, as far as I can determine, was because since I am ‘spurning my femininity’, I can’t possibly believe in female empowerment for others. Apparently, because I’m choosing to align myself with the more ‘powerful’ gender, that automatically means that I am subjugating women and working against them.

A Reminder About the Purpose of This Blog

Hey followers,

We over here at Art of Transliness just wanted to post a friendly reminder about the purpose and intentions of this particular tumblr. As noted in our “About This Blog” tab, we, your two Mods Adrian and Zak, are here mainly to post resources for transmen who lean more towards the transmasculine spectrum of expression while still respecting and encouraging other forms of gender expression.

That being said, this is not a follower submission-based blog (FuckYeahFTMS is a good example of this kind of tumblr) nor is it a place to solicit your blog/youtube/top surgery fund/etc. We’ve been getting a lot of people looking for a signal boost lately and unfortunately we will not be posting those asks/submissions.

We do have a place to submit but we’d rather it be things that are relevant and useful for other transmen like product reviews, trans* related art, giveaways, useful videos and what-have-you.

We have given signal boosts to some of our followers in the past, like guys making creative gifts to raise money for top surgery, or guys looking for participants for a trans*related study to list a couple, but unfortunately we won’t be doing a lot of this as it really strays from our theme and purpose.

Please do not be upset if your ask/submission does not make it on the page, we are trying to use our best discretion when it comes to our followers and what they want and need from this blog.

Just trying to keep you all in the loop! Thanks for following and supporting us!

The way of being a real man

A great life is that you can really enjoy is doing what you want to do, doing what you want without the rules, the laws, or even other’s opinions on something what your heart desires. Accomplishing the things that make you feel more completed, alive or even feeling like you have more energy is one of ways of living this world. Whether it’s considered from a lot of people “illegal” “immoral” “perverted” or even “crazy” based on something they don’t understand which they limited the ideas or refusing to try understand why it , if it doesn’t involve with hurting others, causing psychological pain, physical injuries or anything like that, then it’s doesn’t matter. It’s your life. Without the “rule system”, or society’s approval, you are a living being that can actually do whatever you want. It’s true that if want something that requires something like money; you can still do it with hard work of course. Money is a design that individuals use to systematize the civilization. Being truly rich is developing your inner power, like being very patience, having plenty of strength and willpower, ability of being understanding and being very creative. Having qualities that are helpful can considered real wealth, because they are things you have earned which no one can steal them from you.

There is no “real” or ”normal” masculinity or femininity in our human lives. They are just simply words to describe the different kinds of forms, energies or expression we have in this mysterious, dark but at the same time, wonderful place to have experiences our souls crave for like food. It the state of mind that describes what kind of people we really are. If you feel deeply inside you are a man then you are one. No matter what people say or think about you, it’s how you feel and say about yourself that matters. We are in more like a dream, just going though life to wake up and look back what we did in our lives to the meanings we knew to understand for the unknown. Yes, Life can be frightening because the things we see things that either too confusing or harmful for us to deal with. But it’s truly the harm we are truly against. Dealing with life or other people, in a way, it’s like math, sure some are pretty easy, very challenging or just too simply too frustrating for some to work on, but it’s very important to learn more from math, even if we don’t like it or want to, we still must learn from it if many of us wants to make this world, this dream we are more like living in, less stressful and more accepting than it ever was before.

Hacker Factor's Gender Guesser → hackerfactor.com

A text analyzer (needs a block of text at least 300 words in length) that attempts to analyze the writer’s gender and whether the writing itself is formal or informal.

While it’s impossible for it to accurately predict the author’s gender 100% of the time, it may be more interesting to find out how the writing itself is gendered and what kind of words and syntax make it so. When does your writing slip from MALE to WEAKLY FEMALE? When would you use different sentence structures to express yourself? Of course in various situations we would all want to write formally, gently, expressively, emotionally, coldly, etc. This is a cool little tool to check out anyway.
